History

Methodism in Wilkesboro dates its beginnings to the eighteenth century. It is of historical record that early Methodist Circuit Riders conducted preaching services in Wilkes County (Wilkesboro) before 1800. As early as 1800 there were Methodist Classes organized and a Methodist Sunday School is known to have been in operation as early as 1830.

Wilkesboro UMC dates back to 1800 or earlier. The present church sanctuary was built in 1896, but the chapel, being the original church building, pre-dates that. The original education building was built in 1948 and excavation for the original fellowship hall was done in 1958. The present sanctuary was dedicated on October 28, 1903, and has undergone several renovations since then.

Beginning with only a few charter members, there have been over 2,000 members pass through its records. The church has had three locations. The first was on the hill above the old Court House, the second at the south end of West Street, and the current location on Main Street.
