Sewing Bee

MISSION PROJECT: SEWING BEE

To God be the glory! The Sewing Bee group began making masks at the beginning of April 2020 for church family and friends. Information will be updated soon sharing the good news of how this all came to be.

LuoPads for women launched March 19, 2019.  The documentary “Period. End of Sentence”, which recently won an Oscar, is about the taboo of menstruation and lack of hygiene products in a small village in India. This village is like thousands in the world where women are ostracized and often prevented from leaving home or attending school during that time of the month. In many cases, women only have grass, leaves, or wood chips to use. A period should be the end of a sentence, and not the end of a girl’s education.

The Sewing Bee group sews hundreds of washable and reusable feminine pads for women in need. These pads are combined with panties, a washcloth, safety pins, and waterproof bag to make a kit for a woman to use during menstruation at a cost of $9.  You can help support this project with “Luo Pads” on the memo line of your gift to WUMC.

The group continues the original mission of making dresses, shorts, and book bags for international mission teams (over 14 countries) to distribute since its inception in August 2014.

Thanks to the many who volunteer their time and supplies to make this happen!

Summer Literacy Camp

The Duke Endowment is working with rural congregations in North Carolina to combat learning loss in their communities through evidence-informed summer literacy programs for rising first- through third-graders. The goals are to improve literacy outcomes for students who are at risk for reading failure and encourage churches to play an effective role in helping children and families. Wilkesboro UMC has been a partner with The Duke Endowment for the last several years and has received positive response from parents and the education community. For more information on this ministry, contact the church office.
