United Women in Faith

The PURPOSE of United Women in Faith
The organized unit of United Women in Faith shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
Meeting Date/Time/Place:
We meet on the first Tuesday of each month (except August & December) at 6:30 p.m. in the Ecclesia classroom, E-21, (unless otherwise announced). The United Methodist Men prepare a meal at 6:00 p.m. which we are invited to join; cost is $5.00/person.
History/Information:
Wilkesboro UWF {formerly United Methodist Women (UMW)}, previously known as the Wesleyan Service Guild and the Women’s Society of Christian Service, has been active in the church and the UWF Appalachian District (formerly UMW North Wilkesboro District) of the Western North Carolina Conference UWF since 1956. The UMW program reflects the historical thrust of mission through spiritual growth; mission education; Christian leadership development; Christian social involvement; Nurturing for Community; and support for women, children and youth.
Our unit currently has 31 members. We financially and prayerfully support various District and Global UMW mission areas, an adopted missionary, and various local mission efforts.

Bethlehem Center – Winston Salem, Prayer and Self-Denial Love Offering, World Thank Love Offering, our mission pledge (financial support) to Appalachian District UWF for global mission support. Through our mission pledge and joining with other UWF units:
- we support nearly 90 NMIs across the United States serving the needs of marginalized and vulnerable communities
- we support regional missionaries, focusing on issues of health, gender equality, and elimination of violence among women, and support for the uprooted and marginalized
- we provide funds for grants and scholarships for international and national mission grants, cultivation grants for missionary conferences, social justice issue grants, Theressa Hoover Community Service and Global Citizenship Award, and international and national scholarships.
- In service and advocacy, we work on peace and justice, education, the rights of children, human rights, and farm workers’ rights, we work in partnership with coalitions on many justice issues, we host leadership training on our social justice priorities, and we have a program for consecrating deaconesses and home missioners to a lifetime of service.
- We own and operate the Church Center for the United Nations (CCUN) located in New York City across the street from the United Nations; and the Brooks-Howell Home Retirement Home originally founded for deaconesses located in Asheville, N.C. These operations are primarily funded by the rental and service fee income that they derive and are overseen by some of our national office staff.
We also have an active Legacy Fund Endowment Campaign, which will be an ongoing support of income, ensuring that our important work will always continue.
